Because if you decide to get rid of Vista Xp will not boot anymore if Vista was using botmngr for both drives.

Vista MBR vs. XP MBR
To Windows, Linux, its filesystems, its boot loaders, etc. are not recognized for what they are and ignored; or are interpreted as possible viruses and eradicated. This is particularly true of the MBR of the C: drive. If you're using XP, maybe it's overwriting the Linux boot loader on the MBR with its own.

Changing OS back to Win ME from XP
Then you have the choice of using XP bootloader to start up Linux or replace it with Grub/LILO. Both works, but beware that any Update/Repair of XP will wipe out the Linux bootloader and replace it with the XP one without any question.
